ERA Offices

A modern collaborative workspace.

We were approached by ERA Planning and Environment in Hobart, Tasmania, to design an inviting office that included an open plan area, breakout meeting rooms, amenities and relaxation spaces. Considering the modest budget and limitations posed by the heritage building, our design - centred around a timber core spanning the length of the office - features carefully chosen materials that reflect both the natural light of the space and the sustainable values of our client.

The warm tones of the timber and the floor’s subdued finish make the most of the low natural light in the building, and frame the darker features of the space. The original interior brick walls maintain the building's link to the city’s context and history.

At just 180 square metres, the office’s compact footprint and minimal natural light posed a series of challenges. Our close collaboration with our clients was a key part of delivering a design which conserves the building's character, utilises the space efficiently, and provides ERA’s team with a sense of space and warmth.

The city's context.

Vertical Tasmanian oak battens form the heart of the office - a calm, repetitive pattern intricately connecting the space. Along the front meeting rooms, the battens expand, giving an immediate sense of open space despite the building’s narrow footprint. Past these initial areas, the battens contract over the kitchen, cupboards and bathroom entrance, concealing the services and creating a natural transition towards the relaxation room at the end.

Spaces to dwell and connect.
