Jax Cheng

Graduate of Architecture

B.Arch, M.Arch
Hobart Studio

Fascinated by building things - and, just as often, taking them apart - from a young age, Malaysia-born Jax’s curiosity about the built environment naturally evolved into an early love for drawing and model-making.

Following the completion of his Bachelor of Architecture in Malaysia, Jax gained hands-on experience in residential and commercial projects, before moving to Australia. He undertook his Master of Architecture at the University of Tasmania, where he was shortlisted for the 2023 Barry McNeill Graduate Prize.

Jax’s design sensibility is inspired by minimalist and expressive architecture, and he is particularly drawn to Tadao Ando’s use of light, concrete and silence to shape space with emotion and clarity. When approaching a project, Jax begins by understanding its context - site, climate, culture, and client aspirations - and then allows those elements to guide his design process. He believes in creating architecture that is purposeful, clear and sensitive to its surroundings, engaging not just space, but also time and memory.
