A light-filled family home, wrapped around a north-facing courtyard, on a quiet residential street in Launceston, Tasmania.
Ivy Lane Residence, focused on a central courtyard that can be accessed and enjoyed from all parts of the space, reflects the welcoming social lifestyle of its owners. We designed the home to have its back to the street, turning its attention instead to the northern aspect, a centred view that provides abundant light to the open living areas and mirrored bedroom wings — even on the most overcast Tasmanian day.

Floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding doors, spanning the entire northern aspect of the living area, open to the outside green space and pool. On the adjacent wall, we added timber panelling that runs over the sunken lounge, framing the custom built-in seating, and adding a warm contrast to the polished concrete floor. Matching timber details on windows, benches and doorways link the different spaces throughout the home.
A seamless transition.
Simple, comfortable, unimposing.
Both the facade and the interior of the house are stripped back and considered. No room or material used in the space is designed to stand above the other. The result, which came about through our close collaboration with the owners, is a connected space that allows for a unique al fresco experience.
The exposed white brick exterior is complemented by the tones and materials of the indoor space, which continues the social intention of the courtyard. We designed the living room and contemporary kitchen to be the heart of the home, a connected space to share and enjoy experiences.
A constant feel.
